I am curious how the general Deaf Community feels about people with Auditory Processing Disorders? I am listed as being functionally Deaf, though I can hear sounds I can't process them properly to get any meaning out of them in most situations.
If someone is sitting with me one on one I can use visual cues and lipreading to catch parts of the coversation.
Though I find ASL to be a more effective form of communication. And have made many friends in the Deaf Community near where I live. I am accepted and welcomed to the community here, but was curious what the thoughts were outside of the people I have already made strong friendships with.

I my self was just dx with CAPD and I am also blind, I had CAPD all my life through and now that I learnt I have it, I am now understanding why I had / have the issue I have. I was not treated as if I had a hearing lose althrough I have many test that show a conductive hearing lost but it was never concetin. I also wounder what the Deaf Community things about this CAPD thing and do they concider the person with CAPD to be deaf.

Hello MomHyland! I, too have CAPD and it is difficult to explain to people. This processing disorder is where the brain does not hear. It's like we have a short in our system from the ear to the brain. This can be caused from family genetics or a head injury. I consider myself hard of hearing, although I wear an FM system on my job to help me hear. I think the deaf will accept you as long as you are learning their language. Sign On! I luv ASL! DreamyD

To answer you question, I think the Deaf community has no problem in accepting anyone who shows a willingness to communicate with them (and hold no prejudices). Basically Yes, the Deaf community at large will accept CAPD. I am severely HofH and found the Deaf (most I have talked with) are accepting of anyone with a hearing loss.

i have auto immune system disease and i classified as a deaf guy aswell but with a digital aid i get about 40% hearing in 1 hear n none in other but with me im different i have cerbal palsey so i cant rely on asl just lip reading n visual cues here but i didnt loose my hearing til i was 33 yrs old n im just shy of 38 yrs old in a few weeks
